History

The history of Universitas Katolik Soegijapranata began with the establishment of Unika Atma Jaya Semarang. The initial idea of establishing Unika Atma Jaya Semarang was initiated in July 1963. At that time, there was a meeting of Catholics from Central Java. Dr. Frans Seda as chairman of the Catholic party and the chairman of Yayasan Unika Indonesia Atma Jaya Jakarta, brought up the idea of establishing a Catholic university in Semarang and received positive responses from Catholic scholars and leaders.

On July 5, 1964 it was decided to establish Semarang Branch of Universitas Katolik Atma Jaya, including the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, and educational institution for pharmacist assistant. Then it developed with the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Engineering.

Unika Atmajaya has several campuses: at Jalan Brigjen 27 Semarang, Jalan Srigunting Number 10 Semarang, Jalan Seroja Semarang, and Jalan Seroja Dalam 1 Semarang. Yayasan Sandjojo was established in 1966 as the management and funder for the university. However, in 1970, Semarang Branch of Unika Atmajaya experienced a decline and also internal and external crises. Yayasan Sanjoyo, hence, decided to suspend Unika Indonesia Atmajaya on October 25, 1972 due to various considerations.

The suspension decision elicited reactions from various parties, especially engineering students majoring in architecture who were persistent in fighting for the continuation of the Faculty of Engineering majoring in architecture, including lecturers who still have a will to teach even without salary. Therefore, an effort was made to save the existence of the Faculty of Engineering by changing its name to the Institut Teknologi Katolik di Semarang (ITKS).

The development of ITKS was quite encouraging. Government assistance through Kopertis Wilayah 6 in the form of facilities, technical and financial assistance, as well as assistance from the local government and the private sector encouraged the acceleration of the development of ITKS. The development of ITKS and the desire to expand educational services further, encouraged ITKS as an Institute to be transformed into a university.

Mgr. Alb. Soegijapranata S.J.

The idea emerged in 1981 and was approved for changing ITKS into a university. At that time Dr. A. Suroyo suggested the name Soegijapranata as the name of the university with the consideration that Mgr. Alb. Soegijapranata is a national hero, one of the nation's best men who deserves to be an example for Indonesian Catholics.

Mgr. Alb. Soegijapranata was the first native Archbishop of Semarang who became a national figure. In difficult situation, he always showed a distinctive character in his views on statehood, nationality, society, education and spirituality. His distinctive character is his nationality lies on love to his nation and country, to Catholics. He always advised to Catholics to be 100% Catholics and 100% Indonesians. The idea for the name Soegijapranata as a University was unanimously approved.

In July 1981 through the Decree of Yayasan Sanjoyo number 175 of 1981, ITKS was officially merged into the Universitas Katolik Soegijapranata with the campus location at Jalan Pandanaran 100 Semarang. The establishment of Universitas Katolik Soegijapranata received support, not only from Catholics and Semarang Archdiocese but also from higher education scope such as Universitas Diponegoro, Kopertis Wilayah 6, the local government and the central government. Then, in July 1983 the hymn and March of Unika Soegijapranata, which are still sung until today, were composed and arranged by Ir. Ardianto Susilo.

At the time Unika Soegijapranata was established on August 5, 1982, three faculties were opened, namely the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Economics. Due to the improved academic facilities, the increasing number of teaching staff and infrastructure, the building on Jalan Pandanaran 100 was no longer adequate to accommodate the increasing educational activities. Coincidentally, this plan is in line with the Semarang’s city planning locating private educational institutions in one location in Bendan, West Semarang. The first building constructed was the Architectural Studio of the Faculty of Engineering which was completed in 1985. The building was provided by Kopertis Wilayah 6.

Along with the times, Unika Soegijapranata currently has 26 Undergraduate Programs, 6 International Programs, 7 Masters Programs, 2 Doctoral Programs, and 1 Professional Program. In addition, Unika Soegijapranata already has cooperation with institutions and higher education associations both at home and abroad. The academic atmosphere at Unika Soegijapranata always encourages all academic community to keep developing hard skills and soft skills, so that they can give benefit to the surrounding environment. Unika Soegijapranata has been recognized by various groups in Indonesia with diverse student backgrounds. In addition, the entire academic community at Unika Soegijapranata has ample opportunity to develop the values of unity and tolerance by continuing to uphold the values of love, the spirit of indiscriminating, and the values of justice and honesty.
