Latar Belakang

Lomba debat Bahasa Inggris sudah menjadi bagian penting dalam persaingan global untuk meningkatkan kualitas daya saing bangsa. Hal ini dikarenakan, di dalam debat Bahasa Inggris, terdapat tuntutan penggunaan kombinasi kemampuan berbahasa Inggris dan kemampuan berargumentasi. Judgement yang dihasilkan dalam penyampaian argumentasinya perlu melalui alasan dan dukungan fakta yang jelas. Oleh karena itu, di dalam kegiatan debat mahasiswa dituntut untuk tidak hanya mengetahui isu-isu global tetapi juga menganalisisnya dalam meyakinkan publik dengan cara menginternalisasikan dan mengkomunikasikan kemampuan berpikir kritisnya dalam bahasa Inggris. Maka sudah selayaknya, bila Unika Soegijapranata juga mengembangkan debat Bahasa Inggris bagi mahasiswanya. Selain lomba debat bahasa Inggris antar mahasiswa se-Unika Soegijapranata ini diharapkan dapat menjadi ajang menginternalisasikan semangat kompetisi akademis yang positif, oleh karena bahasa yang dipakai adalah dalam bahasa Inggris, maka juga diharapkan menjadi media yang tepat dalam melatih kemampuan negosiasi dan argumentasi mahasiswa dalam skala lokal menuju internasional. Dengan demikian hasil lulusan Unika Soegijapranata mempunyai daya saing yang lebih baik.

Nama Program

EDC 2012( English Debate Competition 2012 )

Tujuan Program

1. Mengembangkan kemampuan mahasiswa untuk berpikir kritis dan analitis sehingga terpacu untuk menyampaikan pendapatnya secara logis dan sistematis.
2. Meningkatkan daya saing lulusan perguruan tinggi melalui media debat ilmiah, meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris lisan, dan menciptakan iklim akademik yang kompetitif.
3. Menjadi media seleksi internal untuk ajang sejenis di luar kampus.

Kriteria Peserta

1. Masing-masing program studi wajib mengirimkan 1 (satu) kelompok  yang terdiri 3 (tiga) orang mahasiswa  S1 aktif angkatan 2010 & 2011.
2. Peserta EDC 2012 bukan peserta  Student Of The Year 2012.

Pelaksanaan Program

Program ini akan dilaksanakan sebagai berikut :

1. Publikasi - 1 – 21 Mei 2012
2. Seleksi tingkat program studi - 10 – 21 Mei 2012
3. Pendaftaran wakil program studi - 16 – 23 Mei 2012 ( saat TM )
4. Technical meeting peserta & panitia - 23 Mei 2012 pukul 08.00 wib
5. Pelaksanaan lomba - 30 Mei 2012

 Metode seleksi

1. Tingkat Program Studi - seleksi diserahkan pada masing-masing progdi.
2. Tingkat Universitas - masing-masing kelompok akan diberi undian lomba beberapa waktu sebelum pelaksanaan lomba yang mekanismenya akan dijelaskan pada saat technical meeting.

Juri yang ditunjuk dari CLT Unika Soegijapranata.

Tempat Pelaksanaan

1. Babak Penyisihan s.d. Semi Final di R. Hijau dan R. LPPM
2. Final di Ruang Theater

Pelaksana Program

1. Tingkat Fakultas/ Progdi    : Dekanat, Kaprogdi, dan beberapa dosen.
2. Tingkat Universitas           : Panitia pelaksana yang ditunjuk oleh WR III.

Hadiah

Dalam lomba ini akan dipilih 3 juara, meliputi:

• ·Juara I                : hadiah berupa uang sebesar Rp 2.250.000,00
• ·Juara II               : hadiah berupa uang sebesar Rp 1.500.000,00
• ·Juara III              : hadiah berupa uang sebesar Rp    750.000,00

Juara I akan mewakili Unika Soegijapranata dalam National University English Debating Championship (NUEDC) tingkat Kopertis Wilayah VI Jateng tahun 2013.

Speakers' role

A speaker who covers all these points will have fulfilled the basic requirement of a good debating speech.

1^st affirmative speaker

1. Define the topic: explain the issue of the debate briefly describing the argument that each side must present.
2. Present the pro statements.
3. Summarize the main argument of the team briefly.

1^st negative speaker

1. Clarify the issue established by the pro’s definition.
2. Present a rebuttal (response that the debater makes to the arguments of the opposing team).
3. Summarize the arguments raised in her/his speech briefly.

2^nd affirmative speaker

1. Present a rebuttal: the speaker rebuts the main points raised by the first negative speaker and support the arguments made by the first affirmative speaker.
2. Present argument.
3. Summarized not only the points made in their own speech, but also the main points raised by their team as a whole.

2^nd negative speaker

1. Present a rebuttal: the speaker rebuts the main points raised by the first affirmative speaker and support the arguments made by the first negative speaker.
2. Present argument.
3. Summarized not only the points made in their own speech, but also the main points raised by their team as a whole.

3^rd affirmative speaker

1. Present a rebuttal: thematic rebuttal should address the key issues of the debate, relating arguments and counter arguments of the pro and contra.
2. Summarized: the third speaker should allow time for a careful and convincing summary their team's main arguments and significant issues in the debate.
3. Note: the third speaker are not allowed to introduce any new matter into the debate.

3^rd negative speaker

1. Present a rebuttal: thematic rebuttal should address the key issues of the debate, relating arguments and counter arguments of the pro and contra.
2. Summarized: the third speaker should allow time for a careful and convincing summary their team's main arguments and significant issues in the debate.
3. Note: the third speaker are not allowed to introduce any new matter into the debate.

Spesifikasi Penjurian

Dalam lomba ini digunakan sistem penjurian dengan jumlah 2-4 juri untuk setiap lomba.

System penilaiannya adalah:

1.  Matter (jumlah 20 point)

Matter meliputi argument yang disajikan peserta debat. Materi yang baik meliputi argument yang logis dan difukung eontoh yang relevan.

2.  Manner (jumlah 20 point)

Manner meliputi eara peserta menyampaikan argumennya. Manner yang baik harns dapat menarik bagi pendengar, sehingga dapat membuat argumennya lebih meyakinkan. Peserta harus memiliki eye contact dengan pendengar, berbieara dengan jelas.

3.  Method (jumlah 10 point)

Method meliputi struktur penyampaian argument dari speaker. Struktur yang baik harus mengidentifikasi key issues, menghubungkannya, penyampaian yang konsisten dan koheren, dan peserta harus dapat mengalokasikan waktu dengan baik.

Quarter Final : A, B/C, D/E, F, G, H/I, J/K, L (4 topics) 

1. The House believe that English is a better language tool for communication than Mandarin.
2. The House believe that beauty pageants just a way of objectifying woman.
3. The House believe that K-Pop and J-Pop celebrities are made for bad role models.
4. The House believe that women should be allowed topless in public.

Preliminary round : B,C,D,E,H,I,J,K (3 topics)

1. The House believe that sex education should be included in curriculum of junior and senior high school.
